Nina Kraviz played Smalltown festival in Melbourne over the weekend, on a bill that included Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock and Bicep.
Stepping up after Dettmann to close with a 3-hour set, Kraviz played what she called a “spontaneous, eclectic yet coherent” mix, that has since come in for criticism on social media, with some attendees reportedly asking for their money back.
The criticism seemed to mainly centre on a forthcoming track from Kraviz’ трип recordings by Russian producer ISHOME, and in particular a D&B section of the unreleased cut.
Kraviz has now responsed to the negative reaction in a lengthy Facebook post, in which she defends the importance of freedom of expression in music and her love of a less predictable DJ style.
“The crowd was receiving it pretty well as far as I could see and the dancefloor was very full till the very end.” Kraviz said in the post about her performance at Smalltown. “And it would have been another good show if not [for] very interesting feedback I got the next day.
“I grew up with a slightly different concept about music as one big sonic space with everything wired into each other. On top of that I believe that music is about freedom of expression and a perfect tool to connect people of a different kind.
“I personally always loved less obvious or predictable sonic landscapes because the unknown was always more attractive to me than what I already have experienced. I always loved Laurent Garnier for this exact reason and for his ability to connect with music.
“On this positive note I would like to send my warmest greetings to those who appreciate me for being myself.”
