Top South London spot Phonox has slipped rather drastically down the poll since claiming the Highest Climber trophy back in 2017 (all the way up at no. 32). To assume that represents a dip in quality would be a colossal error, however. The venue claimed Best Small Club in our Best Of British awards in December 2018, with new Saturday resident Esa and extended-set Sundays from the likes of Dax J and Objekt all impressing. This year brings new short-term Friday residencies — Jayda G and Midland claiming the first two series — so if you’re in town, make sure to head on down.

One glance at the Phonox booking policy tells you that they don’t just have their finger on the pulse, but they are London’s dance music pulse — DJ Stingray, Helena Hauff, Goldie and Jayda G all rocked the two-level Brixton club last year.

But that only tells half the story as fast-rising resident HAAI has taken charge of Saturday nights, with her Rinse FM-approved soundtrack of disco, world grooves, lo-fi house and anything that will flood the dancefloor in funky leftfield sonics getting an airing.

That high-profile residency has been reflected on Friday nights as well with the launch of Parallel, with ALFOS guv’nor Andrew Weatherall taking control of four consecutive weekends, dropping everything from wigged out slo-mo house to Mariana trench deep reggae vibes.

The fun doesn’t just stop at 4am on Sunday morning, however. The club’s semi-regular Sundays at Phonox parties run from the early afternoon and feature a big cast of DJs and artists who are encouraged to dig deep. And when Daniel Avery played, he didn’t just dig deep but carried on for a marathon 10-hour set, putting the four-point Funktion One through its paces.

Here at DJ Mag, we get an extra warm feeling in our hearts knowing that a London club is officially the highest climber in this year’s poll. Take that naysayers! London lives on! In all seriousness though, Phonox’s ascension is testament to the hard work and business acumen of the Columbo Group, who own a host of London venues, including XOYO, which charted at No. 64. Previously known as Plan B, the Brixton venue got a makeover from its new owners, switching the booth to a more appropriate place and adding some minimal but snazzy horizontal lasers. Downstairs also got a refurb, giving it a proper seating area, and, since our last Top 100 Clubs (where Phonox first entered in 87th place), upstairs has also gained some space for R&R, neatly hidden behind a decorative screen. This frees up the club’s small stages for ravers to dance on high — and with the line-ups on offer, it’s impossible not to. Young star HAAi has been dominating Saturday’s with her ongoing residency, while the past few months alone have seen Best Of British winner Denis Sulta, electro whizz Helena Hauff, dubstep dons Mala and Khan & Neek, and celebrated former resident, Jasper James, take to the booth. South London’s number one…

Round the corner from Brixton’s O2 Academy there’s a nightclub doorway. From the outside you’d think it’s a small gaff, but inside it’s a veritable Doctor Who’s Tardis! Formerly known as Plan B, Phonox was bought by the Columbo Group last year — they also own XOYO, The Nest and the Jazz Café, amongst other London venues — and had a tasty refurb before re-opening last September.

Best Of British award-winner Jasper James was immediately installed as a resident for Saturday nights, sometimes bringing down unannounced guests like Disclosure and Laura Jones, and other DJs who’ve played extended sets to the big square room recently on the Friday include Omar-S, Joy Orbison and DJ Sprinkles.
